Avr Gcc Define Macro
AVR chips can be programmed using a variety of hardware from a simple serial cable to a dedicated AVR programmer and development station.
While each of these methods has it's own benefits and drawbacks, I will focus on using an Arduino.
May 17, 2013 gcc for avrs runs on macs in several version (see AVR Crosspack/MacPack, not to mention that it's relatively easy to build from source.) There are a couple of Atmel-compatible assemblers (avra and tavrasm, both for 8bit.). The staff uses AVR Studio for programming. But since AVR Studio is supported only on Windows (and I have a Mac), I was looking for AVR programming in Mac. I downloaded Crosspack AVR. But I don't know how to proceed after this point. Also I downloaded TextWrangler (because I was told auto-suggestion is not available in TextEdit). I did search before posting, but did not find anything here in the.ARM. section. Searching for 'mac gcc' gives lots of AVR results, but when you limit the search to this community, nada. I'm pretty experienced with the AVR side of the house, but I have a project where I'm likely to start using an ATSAMS70N19 (I need SDHC, AES and hi-speed USB). Windows users have been enjoying various awesome tools to help with their AVR development process like the Atmel Studio, Codevision AVR, WinAVR, IAR Embedded Workbench, etc. This is the advanced method, for when you need bleeding-edge development and hackability. Not suggested. The following steps are essentially the same for MacOS X or Linux, BSD or any other unixy OS. This is the 'old style' of installing avr-gcc, its longer and more tedious but you are guarantee. The compiler toolchain. If you want a powerful, free and portable compiler for the AVR you'll end up with gcc.

The Arduino is a large micro-controller prototyping platform. Arduino Uno has its IO pins broken out with headers attached. It is fully contained with all the needed parts to run the on board micro-controller such as a crystal and power supply regulation. It also has its own IDE and programming language that is quite similar to C. Using a program, it can be used to flash new software onto AVR chips.
The IDE includes a program called ArduinoISP that is supposed to do just that. Unfortunately, it is very finicky and rarely works with some models of Arduino. A variant on the program made by Adafruit that works more consistently can be found at this location.

If you are using Arduino Uno, then I recommend the latter program as I had much trouble with the official one.
